Earning Credit or Placing into Courses Through Testing
Earning College Credit through Testing
There are multiple ways to earn college credit before you arrive on campus as well as following your arrival to campus. Nationally administered tests include:
AP and IB credits are earned through tests taken before you complete high school. To earn credit through CLEP, contact OSU University Assessment and Testing at 405-744-6687. A list of exams offered at OSU may be found at: http://uat.okstate.edu/testing. CLEP tests cost from $80 to $95.
Other Placement Tests & Readiness Exams
In addition to these national tests, OSU offers campus specific placement in specific subjects to assist in your course choices and academic advising. These tests are FREE.
- Foreign Language Placement: The Department of Foreign Language and Literature offers placement tests in Spanish, German, French, and Russian for students wishing to continue in their language while at OSU. This exam assesses your placement into your chosen language. Students who complete the recommended course with a grade of A or B are then given automatic credit for up to 10 credit hours they may have skipped prior to that course.
The exam for foreign language placement is available during your orientation and enrollment program this summer. However, if you live nearby, you may wish to complete the exam earlier to save time during enrollment.
- Calculus Readiness: Incoming freshmen and transfer students who expect to enroll in Math 2144, Calculus I, should take the online test of calculus readiness. If you are a student in the College of Engineering, Architecture and technology, completion of this test is required prior to orientation and enrollment.
For other students entering programs with heavy emphasis in math (Math, Science, Pre-Health, etc), the calculus readiness exam will assist you in choosing your first math course as well. Students who indicated targetted disciplines in science and math areas will be sent information regarding the calculus readiness exam to be completed prior to orientation and enrollment.
For more information regarding the calculus readiness exam, visit:

- Remediation and COMPASS Testing: Each OSU student's record is academically assessed to determine if a need for pre-college level work is warranted in specific subjects. Without certain foundations, a student may not be ready for college level work and will be required to "remediate" the subject. This assessment is is primarily based on ACT/SAT scores, and high school grades in target subjects.
Students required to remediate subject areas based on State Regents requirements, may opt to test out of their remediation through COMPASS testing. For more information regarding COMPASS testing, contact OSU University Assessment and Testing at 405-744-6687 or visit: http://uat.okstate.edu/testing.
